India's Rice Export Landscape: Where Does Indian Rice Go? Top Buyer Countries Explained
You see "India is the world's largest rice exporter" in every headline. But where does the grain actually land? If you trade rice, source it, or just want to understand the business, the answer shapes every decision you make.
This post gives you the map in plain words.
The Problem: Big Headlines, Blurry Picture
India ships rice to more than 172 countries, according to trade reporting. That number sounds impressive. It does not tell you who the big buyers are or what they buy.
Two very different products hide inside "rice exports." Mixing them up leads to wrong pricing, wrong buyers and wasted calls.
The Context: Two Rice Streams, Two Buyer Lists
APEDA, the government body that tracks agri exports, reports separate numbers for each stream in 2025-26.
Basmati: fewer tonnes, higher value
- Volume: 6.52 million tonnes
- Value: Rs 50,138.28 crore (US$ 5.67 billion)
- Top buyers by share: Saudi Arabia (16.6%), Iran (13.9%), Iraq (11.2%), UAE (8.2%), Yemen (5.7%), USA (5.0%)
Basmati buyers are mostly in West Asia. They pay for aroma, long grain and consistency.
Non-basmati: bigger volume, different buyers
- Volume: 15.01 million tonnes
- Value: Rs 51,892.32 crore (US$ 5.82 billion)
- Top buyers by share: Benin (11.5%), Bangladesh (9.3%), Guinea (6.6%), Togo (6.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (5.4%)
Here the pull is West Africa and Bangladesh. These are volume markets where price and steady supply matter most.
What the two lists tell you together
Basmati is about 30% of the combined tonnage but about 49% of the combined value. These are our own calculations from the APEDA figures above. Small tonnes, big money.
The Rule Every Exporter Should Know
On 24 September 2025, DGFT moved non-basmati rice from "free" to "allowed subject to registration of contracts with APEDA." The registration fee is Rs 8 per tonne. Basmati has worked this way for years.
If you plan a non-basmati shipment, register the contract first. Skipping it is not an option.
The Solution: Match Your Rice to the Right Map
1. Selling basmati? Start with West Asia. Build your offer around grain length, ageing and packing.
2. Selling non-basmati? Look at West Africa and Bangladesh. Lead with price, volume and shipping reliability.
3. Exporting either? Register contracts with APEDA before you ship.
4. Planning ahead? Check APEDA's product pages each year. Shares move.
Key Takeaway
India's rice story is two stories. One earns by quality in West Asia. The other earns by scale in Africa and South Asia. Know which one you are in, and pick buyers to match.
